The Second Career Pivot Trap No One Talks About

A job termination or separation is often one of life’s most stressful events. In the beginning, it is hard. There's the shock and uncertainty. The hit to your identity, not to mention the financial concerns. Then you send out endless applications. Getting your hopes up, only to be ghosted.

For many established professionals, especially those in midlife, there's a second trap that no one talks about. It's the moment when unemployment starts to feel... comfortable. At first, losing your job feels like an emergency. Then something unexpected happens.

You catch up on all the things you've been putting off for years.
You finally organize the garage.
​You volunteer for causes you care about.
You spend time with aging parents.
You travel.
You reconnect with friends.
You take the course you've been meaning to take.
You cook the recipe you clipped from a magazine a decade ago.

You say yes to opportunities.
After all, you can always look for a job around them.
The flexibility feels amazing.

After decades of meetings, deadlines, performance reviews, office politics, and packed calendars, it can feel like you've finally exhaled. Then one day you look up and realize, it's been a year. The applications have slowed. The networking conversations have stalled. The urgency is gone. Do I even want to go back to the 9-5 grind anymore? Did retirement sneak up on me?

You my friend, have gotten a glimpse into what could be. During this year, you've adjusted your lifestyle enough that the financial pressure isn't immediate. But "not immediately panicking" isn't the same as having a long-term plan. Can you afford to continue on this path for the next 30-40 years? The earth may be shifting under your feet. A year ago, you were sure what came next, and now you are not so sure. 

This is where many people get stuck. Not because they lack options. Because they have too many. The traditional career ladder no longer feels appealing. The idea of returning to a full-time corporate role feels like cruel and unusual punishment. Yet complete retirement isn't financially viable, or emotionally satisfying. But how do you figure out what comes next?

When I work with clients, we start with questions like: 
How much money do I actually need to make?
Do I need benefits?
What does retirement look like for my spouse?
Are we on the same page financially?
Is your spouse comfortable with the current situation, or is resentment quietly building?
What happens when alimony ends?
What happens if circumstances change?
And perhaps the biggest question of all:
What do I actually want the next ten years of my life to look like?

Instead of starting with a job title, consider what do you actually want? What kind of life are you trying to build? How does that fit with the people you share your life with? What do you need financially to support that vision?

Once you know the life you're trying to create, the career decisions become much easier. Without that vision, you're left spinning in anxiety and uncertainty. With it, you have a plan. And plans create momentum. If you've been out of work longer than expected and you're starting to wonder what comes next, perhaps the question isn't, "How do I get another job?" Perhaps the better question is: "What do I want my life to look like over the next ten years, and what role does work play in making that possible?"

That's where the real career pivot begins.
